We’re interested to see how McQueen works on a larger scale given the depth of this cast and the period setting.

The seems to be the prevailing feeling here, at least with festival-goers, but we’re unsure if their feedback will register since everyone is talking about the sex scene between Danielle Radcliffe and Dane DeHaan. We’re surprised that Sony Pictures Classics didn’t cut a new trailer teasing it right before opening weekend.

On May 13, 1985, Philadelphia police dropped two pounds of military explosives onto a city row house occupied by the radical group MOVE. The resulting fire was not fought for over an hour although firefighters were on the scene with water cannons in place. Five children and six adults were killed and sixty-one homes were destroyed by the six-alarm blaze, one of the largest in the city’s history. This dramatic tragedy unfolds through an extraordinary visual record previously withheld from the public. It is a graphic illustration of how prejudice, intolerance and fear can lead to unthinkable acts of violence.
New York-based indie Zeitgeist Films knows how to promote a political documentary, and this look at an under-reported event from the Reagan Era seems to be registering with people on Facebook and elsewhere.

Adapting a David Sedaris story for the big screen is both an honor and a daunting task — we’re unsure if a film can even come close to matching his written tone effectively — but director/adapter Kyle Patrick Alvarez has laid the foundation here, and reportedly there are fine performances from star Jonathan Groff, the oddly sexy Corey Stoll from “House of Cards”, the reliable Denis O’Hare and Dale Rickey, and what’s said to be a surprising and subdued turn from former “SNL” player Casey Wilson.

Here, he teams up with Josh Peck for director Benson Lee, who is turning his documentary into a feature for Screen Gems, who haven’t put out a dance movie since Stomp the Yard, surprisingly. I’ll make a large-popcorn bet that Brown’s character redeems himself during the course of this battle.

Sony is looking to build a franchise, and it’s ultimately not surprising to see Harald Zwart, who helped turn The Karate Kid into an over-performing worldwide hit, in the director’s chair. If the initial formula works, look for this story to get even cooler as it progresses.
